Intended Use
This
test card is primarily used for irregular antibody screening and
crossmatching tests. It is for clinical use only and is not intended for
blood source screening.
The Anti-Human Globulin (Coombs) test is a key method for detecting antibodies or complement proteins that are bound to red blood cells. The irregular antibody screening test is used to detect the presence of irregular antibodies in plasma by screening red blood cells. Typically, the red blood cells used in this test are O-type cells with a known antigenic profile (from 2 to 3 different individuals). This screening can beperformed either before or along with crossmatching to help identify and confirm the presence of clinically significant antibodies in the patient early on.
The crossmatching test is an essential part of determining compatibility for blood transfusion, divided into the major and minor tests. In the major crossmatch, the recipient's plasma is tested againstthe donor's red blood cell suspension to identify any antibodies in therecipient's plasma that may react with the donor's red blood cells. The minor crossmatch tests the donor's plasma against the recipient's red blood cells to check for any antibodies in the donor's plasma that may react with the recipient's red blood cells. A successful crossmatch is only confirmed when there is no hemolysis or agglutination in any of the tests, ensuring that the donor's blood is safe to transfuse to the recipient.
